Problems After Windows Defrag Pop Up Hit Me
Don't know how/why my defrag wouldn't work (no third party program) but I did reformat & reinstall original software due to other problems, "upgraded" to XP SP2, installed all my other What’s in these Windows 10 auto-installed updates, anyway?Microsoft wants Windows 10 to be more akin to a web service than a traditional operating system. was getting same message as "coli" from 11/08/04 post. It should cause the Recovery disc to boot and give you options to reformat the machine and reinstall Windows and all the software as it came from the factory.It's not always useful reference
thanks Joaquin. So, I returned the machine and bought a more powerful Athlon 6000+ 3GB of memoryt and 500GB disk. So I finally just manually copied all the DFRG* files from the Windows/Servicepacks/I386 folder to the Windows/System32 folder, confirming that I did want to over write those that duplicated. After that I could shrink about half of the partition.
I tried many things and many disk defragmentation software, but none worked, until I followed the process described here consisting of: 1. I read an article which stated that defragmentation used often will shorten an IDE Drive's lifespan. My idea was to divide the hard drive into three partitions: 40 GB for Vista Ultimate (NTFS), 120 GB for Linux, and 160 GB for data (NTFS) starting from a 160GB It worked perfectly. During system boot, instead of mashing F8, hit SPACEBAR; which should result in a different boot menu with an OS selection and a Memory Diagnostic selection.

thank you! Upon logging in it got stuck at "Preparing your desktop…" for a long time before changing to a plain blue screen (not BSOD) and just sitting there. My Manjaro laptop is still fast despite using it every day. I was only able to shrink the partition down to about 222 GB using the partition manager that comes with Vista.
